I have absolutely no idea what is going on with the alleged Joe Biden campaign. Is he running? Is he not running? When will we know? October? Isn’t that kind of late? There are lots of questions and I have a few. I simply don’t trust the narrative that our news media is feeding us. I also don’t trust the Democratic party establishment to tell us the truth–just look at the tainted frontrunner Hillary. Remember how Senator Obama gave that rousing speech at the Democratic National Convention which put him on the map as a presidential contender? No senators or governors have been groomed as political rockstars other than Elizabeth Warren, who swears she isn’t running. I guess the party assumed that everyone would be happy with Hillary so why bother with any other choices?
Then Bernie, who is perceived as honest, started surging and Hillary’s looking weaker because can’t shake the scandals. Whether she’s guilty or not, the perception that she’s crooked has stuck. Suddenly a week ago, all the buzz was about Biden and Hillary got to comment to the press on the new candidate who might be running rather than repeatedly defend herself against alleged improprieties. Seemed like a distraction to me. To give Hillary a new topic to discuss apart from emails and to make Democrats feel that they have a wider choice of candidates as Republicans do. And perhaps the Dems are afraid that a truly progressive candidate like Bernie would force them to clean up their rotten act as a party should he take the lead. Democrats have become so “centrist” (aka GOP lite) under Obama that the last thing they want is a candidate who would actually tax the rich, tax the corporations, break up the big banks, defense industry etc. Establishment Dems are too busy taking donations from these groups to speak out against them as Bernie does.
Then we hear that Biden has met with Elizabeth Warren and that she has suggested that she won’t run for the Senate in 2020. Is this a smokescreen to make Dems who aren’t thrilled with Hillary think: “Stick with the Democrats even though they no longer represent working people, because they may represent working people in 2020 if Liz runs?” Then Biden met with Obama, who is said to have OKed his VP’s run to replace him. Yet Obama hasn’t endorsed either Hillary or Biden. There’s some suggestion often repeated on the news that while Clinton has locked up most of the campaign cash, there are still some “Obama Democrats” who never cared for her and would back Biden if he ran. So he’s opening investigative committee or whatever. I think the party just trying to have a back-up in case Hillary, the one dud the party focused all their efforts on, tanks.
So in other words, Biden’s looking for money. We’re fed a story about how he has to check with his family to see if they can hold up to the rigors of another campaign after the death of Joe’s son. Beau Biden, who died of brain cancer at 46, urged his father to run. Look, I don’t want to make light of a tragic death but I have no personal connections to the Biden family. Should a possible leader of the free world be checking with his family to see if they’re ok with his run? Or should Biden run based on his son’s dying wish, however heartfelt? It all sounds very touching, but I’d like for a potential president to come with a bold vision for the entire country–not whether or not he’s resolved his family drama.
And that’s Joe’s problem. He has no vision other than Hillary’s. He’s perceived as an average guy who takes Amtrak to work so he might appeal to workers. That’s why Obama picked him as VP–Joe appeals to working class white males who just couldn’t get behind Obama. Unions have started to endorse Biden’s run, despite the fact that Bernie is their most outspoken champ. And Biden didn’t say much about unions as VP when Obama turned his back on Michigan and Wisconsin when their GOP governors shredded union rights in those states. Remember Obama’s campaign claim that he would put on his comfy shoes and march with unions if they needed help? I guess he couldn’t find those shoes because that’s yet another campaign promise Obama reneged on. Where was Biden, union supporter, during that fiasco? Where was Biden denouncing Obama’s secret trade deal, the TPP, which EVERY union bashed because it will help kill the few remaining manufacturing jobs left in the US? Bernie was slamming the TPP. Hillary called it the “gold standard” of trade deals.
Biden came out in favor of gay marriage before Obama, so there’s that. I think that was a heavily orchestrated way of safely seeing if there was any outrage over the VP’s stance before the president made a move. When there wasn’t much pushback, spineless Obama stepped in and said he too supported gay marriage after polls showed that a majority of Americans supported it. How brave! What leaders! The press releases claimed that Biden went commando with his gay marriage support–the White House, it was claimed, knew nothing about the “ground-breaking” announcement the VP would make. Yeah, right. But if Joe was speaking out of turn, that’s actually one thing he is known for: gaffes. Saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. So maybe the party establishment feels they need a loose cannon to grab headlines and compete with Trump’s loud mouth.
Other than gay marriage and gaffes, the primary way in which the VP has been presented in almost seven years is the affectionate way that he greets politicians of both parties at official events. Firm handshakes, witty repartee, complimenting the womenfolk, pinching babies’ cheeks–even of GOP offspring! So if you want a candidate who represents hugs, Biden’s your guy!
Speaking of guys, I suspect Biden’s sex is another of his assets. Many backward people in this country don’t feel that the presidency is a job for a woman, which is sad. But in it’s desperation and disappointment with Hillary who has failed to gin up the base despite her immense campaign coffers, the Democratic party establishment needs to snatch support however they can. So vote for Biden if you want Hillary in male form. Maybe Hillary will pick Biden as her VP. That could halt any progressive policies from being discussed and keep the Democrats in their centrist position which has failed the 99% during Obama’s two terms.
