Just a thought…

Silly! Kendall would never walk up to a white cop & give him a Pepsi. Kylie’s Pepsi tone-deaf ad

Is it important? No, but it is mystifying that a company with so much money for marketing research could come up with something everyone hates.

Wired.com; In the 2-minute-39-second “short film,” Jenner throws off the chains of the modeling industry by taking off her wig, then leaving a photoshoot to join a protest. After sharing some knowing nods and #woke-ass fist bumps with her fellow protestors, the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star manages to bring everyone together by … handing a cop a Pepsi. The message is clear: All those Women’s Marches, Black Lives Matter protests, and demonstrations outside Trump Tower would be much more effervescent—and effective!—if someone had just brought some soda.”

Lucille Ball’s last performance. I worship this lady!

And I especially love that she not only is wearing a super-short jacket dress, she actually throws her hands up at the end and exposes her crotch. At 77!

Mylene Cruz’s take on gospel classic Keep A Light In My Window

New music that’s great! It’s actually a cover of an old gospel song which many artists recorded and is now featured on The Get Down, a Netflix series which has also featured a cover of There But For The Grace Of God. This re-release very wisely chose to mimic the arrangement of the New York Community Choir’s heavenly disco era’s version. I’m not religious at all, but I can certainly appreciate a message about bringing peace and a “world of love.” Kinda makes a nice break from the “all eyes on me/VIP” crap.

Daily WTF?

Trumpcare failed! Democrats rejoice…and then hopefully reflect.

Very nice to see Trumpcare fail, as it would negatively impact tens of millions who’d lose their insurance coverage. And there is other good news. This is a failure for Trump personally on one of his key campaign promises, a failure of the GOP-led Congress, and even a failure for Trump within his own party. I guess the GOP Congress members who turned their backs on their new president have heard from their constituents and know that too many of them rely on the ACA to chop it. When the people stick it to their representatives and say “DO WHAT WE WANT OR WE WON’T RE-ELECT YOU!”, this is democracy at work. Reassuring to see that this still functions occasionally. This fiasco also reminds us that before the bright, shiny object that is Trump entered the GOP primary with headline-grabbing scandals galore, the GOP was already a shambles of infighting between the establishment republicans and the tea party. I also love Trump’s hollow “threat” to his party in Congress–either pass Trumpcare or he’ll move on. Yeah, I guess you kinda had to move on from a battle you lost.

Let’s also rejoice that every democrat voted against it–not like the corporate democrats who often find a way to jump ship to block progressive legislation. Remember Cory Booker’s and several other democrats who voted recently against Sanders’ plan for cheaper drugs? Or Mary Landrieu, Joe Lieberman and Ben Nelson’s holding out on the ACA’s passage? But while the left is rejoicing, don’t we also need to look at the fact that Obamacare was merely a step in the right direction which still needs improvement? It’s not a secret–progressives like Elizabeth Warren have admitted it during this recent debate. Before the ACA, our insurance system was the #1 cause of bankruptcy. Unless I’m mistaken, it still is. Far too many people are still drowning in medical debt if not actual bankruptcy. While there were some great things about Obamacare like not getting refused coverage for pre-existing conditions, the plan has plenty of problems. Like rising premiums. And the mandate for those who are forced to pay if they choose to have no insurance. My understanding is that for the ACA to work as intended, more healthy young folks needed to sign up for it to offset costs. They didn’t. So something needs to be recalibrated.

Obamacare wasn’t a far enough-reaching reform–it simply made our existing rotten healthcare system more affordable to more people. It helped low income people who may never have had insurance before, but it also made costs on middle income and higher income folks’ premiums to go up. As Obama left office, premiums in 39 states rose an average 25%. Arizona’s premiums rose by a percentage of triple digits. (According to Politifact.) So how affordable is the Affordable Care Act?

Resisting Trump just scored a big victory. But most agree that Obamacare has issues. So after republican voters have swayed their representatives to cave on repealing Obamacare and admit that it’s something most Americans need, can the left now focus on taking another step towards affirming it’s commitment to universal coverage? 80% of democrats wanted some version of single payer when the ACA was being crafted. Obama never pushed for it. Hillary Clinton was for it before she mysteriously flip-flopped during the election, claiming it was radical and pie-in-the-sky. Yeah, so radical that almost every other industrialized country in the West has it.

If the left doesn’t stand up for something that 80% of it’s supporters advocates, then it’s simply the party of anti-Trump without standing for much. And how did the “I’m not Trump and I’m bringing you more of Obama’s policies” strategy work out with Clinton’s campaign?

Drag Queens Of Comedy tour hits LA, NY, SF and Chicago this spring!

This fab line-up is hitting LA, SF, Chicago and NYC this spring. Nice to see Bob The Drag Queen and Lady Red Couture on this year’s bill. If you don’t know the other Lady, she’s best known as Jonny McGovern’s sidekick on his hit web show Hey Qween. But she is also hysterical in her own right and this heifer can really sing!

Stevie Wonder on The Late, Late Show with James Cordon

These segments are cute, and you can feel the host’s love for undeniable musical greats like Stevie Wonder. I try not to think about Stevie’s mildly homophobic comments about Frank Ocean, or the fact that superstars are now forced to do short segments doing snippets of their songs for an audience with ADHD. Or they stick great singers on dancing competitions or judging amateur singing competitions. Why doesn’t it occur to networks other than PBS to air concerts of these great artists? Do we no longer have the attention span to sit through whole songs regardless of how timeless they are?

A rare treat in NYC for Yma Sumac fans by Steve Willis and @ScarletEnvyNYC

Only 2 more performances of Scarlett Envy as Yma Sumac in Steven Willis’s new piece on the peruvian goddess at the Laurie Beechman Theater–March 22 and 29th at 9:30PM. The show includes rare, never before seen footage of the wacky, dramatic diva in her later years. With a few surprises like this, from the review I linked to. For Yma devotees like myself, this new show is unmissable.

“The high point of the show came when Scarlet, wearing a gown and hairdo that matched a photograph of Yma being projected on the screen, seemed to merge with the images. The audience’s response was spontaneously rousing. The male dancers, with ornate headdresses, loincloths, and leather moccasins, did a groovy me-an-Indian-too number round and round the small stage. It was campy and sexy. Scarlet became more and more alive and engaging as the show progressed. She changed into numerous extravagant costumes, all modeled on originals worn by Sumac. Between film clips of Yma’s coloratura flourishes, Scarlet lip-synched Willis’ archival recorded interviews with Sumac.

Sumac was world-renowned for making beautiful, superhuman vocal sounds; words were in every sense secondary. Willis’ way of introducing the audience to Yma skillfully combines images with language and without language. His choice of a lip-synching drag performer to depict a vocal virtuoso is perfect. In Scarlet’s performance, spoken words and vocal flourishes are at times reduced to sequences of muscular patterns on a soundless face.”

I love TS Madison!

It’s great to see Democrats fight the GOP on climate change–but you don’t see it often!

It’s great to see democrats grow some balls and fight–even getting cheers from constituents in a republican district for holding their republican rep responsible for ignoring climate change and Trump’s desire to gut the EPA.

But here’s what sucks. When democrats get elected claiming they’ll protect the environment and then don’t. Democrats admit that climate change is man-made, but then do little once in office. Obama green lit offshore drilling for Shell in the Arctic–despite Shell’s rotten safety record. Obama also leased offshore drilling off the southeast coast from Florida to West VA for the first time ever–when what anyone truly concerned with climate change would be moving towards cleaner fuels like solar and wind. How does the president who saw the horror of the BP spill approve more offshore drilling? Obama loved showing up at international climate change summits to use them as photo ops, and then came up with non-binding agreements without penalties for the very things which create global warming.

Od course, there was that one oddball from Vermont who claimed in one of the debates that the biggest threat to national security was climate change. Not ISIS, not homegrown terrorism. And the news all laughed at him, despite the fact that even the Pentagon is preparing for disastrous effects of climate change. Maybe you’ll think of this oddball when Miami and NYC are under water.
