Dancing a jig in Dublin!

Is Red Cross the best place for Houston donations?

I asked a friend from Houston what the best thing to do if people wanted to help after the flood. He said the best thing was to just donate to the Red Cross. He may well be right.

Then I read this article, which a FB friend posted. I don’t know what the answer is, but I’ve seen other posts urging people to donate to local charities. While some folks have issues with the sometimes sensationalized Huffington Post, this article originally appeared in the well-researched, reader-funder ProPublica, which also regularly furnishes the NY Times with articles. Haiti is not Houston, and one problem that the Red Cross had in Haiti is that they didn’t hire enough people who spoke the language there to be effective. I certainly don’t know how donations to Haiti or Houston are allocated. But if you’re decent enough to help the people of Houston, you may want to do a little research to make sure it does the most good that it can.

An excerpt: “The Red Cross says it has provided homes to more than 130,000 people. But the actual number of permanent homes the group has built in all of Haiti: six.

After the earthquake, Red Cross CEO Gail McGovern unveiled ambitious plans to “develop brand-new communities.” None have ever been built.

Aid organizations from around the world have struggled after the earthquake in Haiti, the Western Hemisphere’s poorest country. But ProPublica and NPR’s investigation shows that many of the Red Cross’s failings in Haiti are of its own making. They are also part of a larger pattern in which the organization has botched delivery of aid after disasters such as Superstorm Sandy. Despite its difficulties, the Red Cross remains the charity of choice for ordinary Americans and corporations alike after natural disasters.”

HOWLING!

Celine Dion, activist

True during Katrina and true after Harvey. Our priorities as a country are so screwed up that it takes a Canadian singer to explain where our tax dollars do go, and where they should go.
“How come it’s so easy in another country to kill everyone in a second, to destroy lives? We need to serve our country.”

Ha!

Tainting the minds of innocents–who now sing my parodies!

My love letter to the LGBTQ community in @Billboard

For Gay Pride Month, Billboard asked numerous pop culture luminaries to write ‘love letters’ to the LGBTQ community. Below, nightclub DJ and drag icon Lady Bunny shares hers. Read more Pride Month love letters here.

The gay agenda has centered on securing LGBT equal rights, which of course we deserve. Slogans like “Love Is Love” seek to show that gay love is not second to the love felt by straights. While I agree with that, there are some characteristics of the gay community which are unique to us, and those should be celebrated. For example, I once went to DJ at a club a few days after New Year’s Eve and noticed that the bouncers were all banged up with bandages, casts and bruises. I asked, “What on earth happened?” and they told me there had been a brawl.

Of course, on paper I know what a brawl is — it’s when a fight starts and others join in. Call me a sissy, but when I see a fight, the last thing I want to do is join them. I’m more likely to leave the club, cross the street or whatever. That’s a trait I think I share with most LGBT people. Many of us have experienced bullying and/or violence ourselves so we tend to frown on it. We typically don’t see physical harm as entertainment when it happens to others. We certainly don’t jump in. That’s a tendency in my community which makes us seem more evolved in that respect. And after scratching my head over that New Year’s Eve brawl, I felt very proud of a community which is less prone to acting on herd instincts which propel us towards fighting.

We’re also pretty damn good at theater, writing, activism, nursing, cooking, styling, dancing and throwing parties! We have a lot going on in spite of the struggles we’ve faced.

Granny is a hoot with her potty-mouthed vegan cake recipe!

She’s so cute. And while I’m one of those who sometimes giggles at hipsters and their special diets, I come from a family of vegetarians. And meat and animal products are one of the largest contributors to global warming. So we laugh, and then maybe some of us will start thinking along these lines?

Bravo, Oliver Stone!

I know nothing about this man’s work and I care nothing for the award ceremonies. I also know and care nothing about when you think decorum dictates the proper time for political speeches is. (Please try and tell the hundreds of thousands who died needlessly in Iraq about decorum.) But I recognize the truth when I hear it. And we don’t often hear it much on the news these days, so maybe it has to be heard from awards shows and art galleries and protests.

We have only two parties in this country. Neither one of them is remotely interested in peace. So neither one has my vote. Wanna talk about how the two parties differing approach to health care? We could have free healthcare without paying higher taxes if 1/2 of our tax dollars didn’t pay for more war. Do you hear either party saying we should pay for our own health instead of bombing other countries to death? Bernie Sanders, who I sort of trust, is now on a tour talking about the thousands who will die if Trumpcare is passed. Does even he talk about the hundreds of thousands we pay to kill when he’s not campaigning? Thank you, Oliver Stone! Your honesty and compassion have just made you a new fan in me.

A very fashionable Donald!

In or near Rochester NY? Check the video art piece I’ve done with Charles Atlas

At the Memorial Art Gallery from June 30th.

“June may be Pride Month (with Rochester events coming up in July), but LGBTQ representation in art is important year-round. “Here she is…v1” is a video art installation created by cinematographer Charles Atlas which showcases iconic drag queen Lady Bunny. The piece will be screened continuously at the Memorial Art Gallery beginning Friday, June 30, as a part of the MAG’s “Media Arts Watch” initiative, curated by moving-image specialist John G. Hanhardt.

Lady Bunny is known for her gigantic blonde wig and raunchy song parodies, but she is also outspoken regarding politics, militarism, climate change, LGBTQ rights, and other hot-button issues. A wall-sized production, “Here she is…v1” demonstrates that Lady Bunny is a force to be reckoned with, incorporating a contemplative monologue intertwined with her risqué stage performance. The one-woman-show ends in a lip-synced performance of one of her songs, “You Were the One.” Charles Atlas is a distinguished video artist who has worked with the likes of performance artist Marina Abramovi and singer-composer ANOHNI, to drop a few names.”

I gotta see this!

Haven’t seen this Broadway’s new production of 1984 and this article could be clickbait which exaggerates the vomiting, fainting and fights caused by this show. Or is it that perhaps that a “well-heeled” Broadway audiences can’t handle the truth?

“We’re not trying to be willfully assaultive or exploitatively shock people, but there’s nothing here or in the disturbing novel that isn’t happening right now, somewhere around the world: people are being detained without trial, tortured and executed,” explained Macmillan. “We can sanitize that and make people feel comforted, or we can simply present it without commentary and allow it to speak for itself.”

Added Icke, “You can stay and watch or you can leave — that’s a perfectly fine reaction to watching someone be tortured. But if this show is the most upsetting part of anyone’s day, they’re not reading the news headlines. Things are much worse than a piece of theater getting under your skin a little bit.”

Theresa Brewer!

Sha Na Na was on TV at a time when I watched a lot of it. This show was part of the 1950s nostalgia of the mid to late 1970s which included Happy Days and Grease. She Na Na is not remembered fondly like those other two–possibly because of the corniest jokes ever–but it was huge at the when it aired. And once again, I am blown away by their guest Theresa Brewer, that pint-size bundle of dynamite. I remembered her name, but don’t exactly recall seeing her. She’s magic!

Do Democrats think they can keep failing because the GOP is so rotten?

Except that democrats aren’t exactly cowards. That implies that they want to do the right thing but are scared to. They’re more greedy than scared, so insurance and big Pharma donations fund their agenda. Sadly, both parties have given up on what voters want. But let’s stay focused on Russia!

Current mood…

Nina Turner has a way with words!

Nina Turner on John Ossoff’s loss to a Trump republican in Georgia’s special election. Since Obama was elected, democrats have been steadily losing Congress in those “shellackings” of Obama’s mid-terms, and they’ve lost around 2/3rds of state senates and governorships and even the White House to a nutjob like Trump with no experience and who insulted over half the country. Do you want to talk about why or act like nothing is wrong and keep on losing?

Georgia Democrats had hoped that Trump’s low approval ratings there could give them an upset in a red state. Maybe dems should try fresh ideas instead of only focusing only Russia. Democrats need an upset themselves. “Isn’t Trump awful?” is not a strategy. Nor is ignoring the fact that democratic voters are more progressive than their representatives and wannabe representatives who are still losing.

This is the most exciting drag performance I’ve seen in years!

Elishaly D'witshes incredible performance. ❤👑
