A LITTLE WARNING ABOUT THIS YEAR’S FLU SHOT

I know that some frown on flu shots but my mom’s a nurse and recommends them. Also, I travel a lot and hours on board a plane sets you up to catch other passengers’ illnesses as you suck in their germs. (As opposed to sucking germs the way I do at bathhouses.) I know there’s a dialogue about whether or not to get flu shots, but I haven’t gotten the flu since I starting getting them a decade ago. And with my work, a debilitating flu which leaves me bed-ridden can screw with my work, because I can’t reschedule a Hallowe’en booking and if I’m that ill I’m to cancel.

So I got my vaccine this year. They always warn that you might have a few flu-like symptoms the day of or the day after, because they are basically injecting you with the flu to strengthen your body against it. But I’ve never gotten those post-vaccine symptoms–nothing but a sore arm. But this year, my arm was REALLY sore for 3 days. And the following day I got really bad flu-ish symptoms including body aches to where walking was an issue. It lasted 48-72 hours after the vaccine. So I called my mama to whine the way I always do and she said there had been many reports of this year’s vaccine brew making people ill. (She is a retired nurse but keeps up with medical newsletters.) I don’t want to get into an argument over whether or not to get flu shots because everyone is different. However, I do want to let you know what my experience was so that if you decide to get a flu shot, you get it on a day when you don’t have much to do for the following couple days in case you experience the bout of mini-flu that I did.

WHAT HILLARY AND LUNATIC BEN CARSON HAVE IN COMMON…

Would you agree that republican presidential candidate Ben Carson is insane?

Well, he’s spouting the same foreign policy of a no fly-zone in Syria that Hillary spouted at the democratic debates. None of the other democratic hopefuls want a no-fly zone except Hillary, who’s a hawk like the GOP candidates. No one dreamt that George W. Bush would start two wars when they elected him. Including the pointless, amoral Iraq war, which which Hillary voted to authorize as Senator. Which created a breeding ground for ISIS, our new enemy. But that’s the goal of hawks–crating new wars wherever they can. Not to make the US safer, but to get the defense industry paid.

LOVE THIS!

HILLARY WILL FAIL AMERICANS THE WAY OBAMA HAS

Before you an fully realize what a corrupt failure Hillary will be if elected, you have to face why Obama is a failure. And how even Bill Clinton’s financial deregulation lay the groundwork for the collapse. I encourage you to read the whole article, but here’s a few quotes from someone who is evaluating “corporate democrats” like the Clintons and Obama from the viewpoint of what they did, are doing and will do as opposed to some cult of personality which makes so many of you claim you “love” Hillary. Do you love bailing out the banks with taxpayer dollars? Did you love the housing collapse? On economic issues, Obama and Clinton are just as bad as republicans. Oh, Hillary can trick you into seeming more progressive until you elect her by stealing true progressives like Sanders’/Warren’s. And then she’ll ditch her newfound progressive policies as soon as she gets into office the way Obama did. You don’t repeat the same mistakes and expect the same results unless you’re insane, right? Is Hillary, whose top donors are all big banks, ever going to break them up as Bernie would try to do? Of course not. She’d never bite the hand that feeds her.

ROBERT KUTTMAN for HUFFPO:   “However, there is one key area that could undercut all of what she has offered. That is her choice of a senior economic team. The recent history of Democratic presidents is not reassuring on that score.

Ever since the administration of her husband, senior economic posts have been given over the Wall Street Democrats. The financial deregulation that collapsed the economy in 2008 was the work of the Robert Rubin economic team that worked for (and on) Bill Clinton.

After that collapse helped propel Barack Obama into the White House in the 2008 election, he disappointed supporters by naming many of the same people or their protégés as his senior economic officials — Larry Summers as top economic honcho, Tim Geithner as Treasury Secretary, more Clinton ex-budget staffers to the Office of Management and Budget. Paul Volcker, useful as a symbol, proved too left wing for the rest of the Obama crew because he was serious about breaking up the big banks. The key economic post in the campaign went to another Robert Rubin protégé, Jason Furman, now head of Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers. The top trade job went to yet another Rubin ally, Michael Froman.

With this team, it’s hardly surprising that Obama opted for propping up rather than breaking up the big banks; and that he embraced budget balance and deficit reduction long before the economy was in full recovery. These moves proved disastrous politically — they validated much of the Republican agenda.

Defenders of Obama say that as a novice, he had no choice but to appoint reassuring voices of experience. But that is nonsense. Other, equally experienced experts on the economy were available who differed in two key respects. They were not interested in defending the Wall Street status quo or in fighting for fiscal discipline over economic recovery. These people were squeezed out or given secondary posts.

The one progressive on the senior economic team, Jared Bernstein, was given the relatively second-tier job of chief economic adviser to Vice President Biden. He became a player only through force of argument and personal appeal.

But others who had the stature and experience to play a top economic role, such as former chair of the Counsel of Economic Advisers Joseph Stiglitz, or FDIC chair Sheila Bair, were not invited to play.

Until the summer of 2008, Obama has insisted that he was taking advice from both Wall Streeters and the centrists — from “both Bobs” — Reich and Rubin. But when he picked his team, it was clear that Wall Street had won.

Hillary looks to be playing something of the same game. In 2008, her advice came from the same people who had staffed her husband’s administration.” MORE:  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-kuttner/who-will-be-hillarys-econ_1_b_8447674.html

JUST WONDERING…

You know those corrugated cardboard sleeves that go around coffee cups to keep you from bunting your hands? I first noticed them at Starbucks. What did we do before those were around? I don’t remember ever burning my hands. Is coffee hotter now? (I do remember something about Starbucks brewing their coffee at a hotter temperature to add strength.) Did we drink coffee in mugs more back then and not get it to go as much? I do recall when I first moved to NYC I’d see many delis who put coffee in a cup with a lid in a paper bag. I never understood that either, because drinks with lids in paper bags seemed likely to leak. As usual, I like to stay focused on the vital issues of the day.

TRICK OR TRICK?

SISTER FOLLIES: BETWEEN TWO WORLDS (A REVIEW)

I finally got my butt over to see Sister Follies: Between Two Worlds starring Joey Arias Nyc, Julie Atlas Muz and the puppetry of Basil Twist. In this nutty and extravagant show, Arias and Muz fly through the air as living marionettes portraying the real life siblings who founded the Lower East Side’s Abrons Art Center. The theater’s celebrating it’s 100th birthday and being haunted by these downtown supernovas is a magnificent tribute. Together, they recount and stage some of the performance space’s biggest hits and misses as they bicker about which sister played a bigger role in putting this gorgeous theater onto the map.

If you’re a fan of Joey’s as I am, seeing this old witch fly around a giant stage in between singing and (yes) dancing in an array of fantastical costumes by Machine Dazzle (formerly of the Dazzle Dancers) is not to be missed. Known for his 6 inch fetish heels, I’m sure that Joey didn’t mind a break from them in lace-up boots with a 2 and 1/2 inch heel typical of the turn of the century–which Joey no doubt wore as a young girl. I’m not as familiar with Julie’s work, but she lights up the stage with her dancing, charm and even a sassy strip featuring the most delectable boobs on the burlesque scene. And although Basil’s puppetry is filtered through a ghostly theme perfect for Hallowe’en, it retains it’s usual sweetness, cleverness and because he hails from San Francisco, a little trippiness to boot. Not to mention the supreme skill with which it’s all executed. As a visual artist, Basil is unparalleled and has a vision easily as distinctive as Tim Burton’s. I especially loved the billowy ghosts with thin, creepy hands in a yiddish production number. Definitely a kooky show, which takes the audience on a whirlwind from the LES to ancient Egypt, to Israel in biblical times and to their flop production of something dreadful by Walt Whitman.

This magical show screams NYC and since there’s only one 100th anniversary, it may never be produced again. But the good news is that it’s been extended through November 7th due to popular demand.

NEW GOP SPEAKER PAUL RYAN ALREADY SPOUTING NONSENSE

How does new GOP Speaker Of The House Paul Ryan have the nerve to stand up and say that working Americans look at Congress and see chaos? Republicans have been responsible for that chaos, blocking most legislation just because and focusing on dozens of abortion bills when many more Amercians are concerned with the economy?

And how does he literally claim that he’s had enough of “favors for the few” when his party is still pushing for the trickle down economics which benefit the wealthy and corporations and which have failed working Americans for decades?

Also sad? The Republicans are actually adopting a “We’re for workers” message, because that’s what they’ve determined people want to hear. And people want to hear it because most aren’t doing well and under two terms of Bush and two terms of Obama, new wealth has jumped right past the middle class to the 1%. Both parties represent corporate interests. And if you don’t believe me, check out Hillary’s top donors–all banks. Ready to bail banks out again with taxpayer dollars while financial CEOs make record profits? Then vote Hillary.

MY REVIEW OF STREET THEATER: A PLAY ABOUT STONEWALL

Last night I caught a completely hysterical play about Stonewall called Street Theater. There are only three shows left and I highly recommend that you RUN to The Eagle to catch this gem. But before I can recommend it to anyone in today’s hyper PC climate, I have a stern warning for you.

StreetTheater

You see, many have just orchestrated a boycott of the Roland Emmerich’s Stonewall movie because they didn’t like the way the director took liberties with the story by using a white cisgender male as the lead. I agreed–it looked silly. The NY Times review said: “Its invention of a generic white knight who prompted the riots by hurling the first brick into a window is tantamount to stealing history from the people who made it.” And Hollywood really needs to get the memo that we aren’t as dumb as they think we are. We don’t need every lead role to be good-looking and young. Hello? Misery? I’m surprised that they didn’t give the white male lead a female love interest–that’s the typical Hollywood formula. The Oscar-nominated The Imitation Game was about a nerdy, gay genius and they even gave him a female love interest because straight America can’t sit for two hours without a boy-meets-girl theme. Even a gay boy? How dumb!

But even as I scoffed at Stonewall the movie, I do remember a time when a major feature about the birth of gay lib in the US would be praised simply because someone was telling our story on a grand scale. Now we take issue with how it’s told and urge others to boycott anything we dislike. Many boycotted a Paris Is Burning screening in Brooklyn this summer because they claimed that the director exploited the subjects and a white dj and bands geared to attract white hipsters were booked on the same day as the screening. I had to laugh at trans activists of color who were screaming about shutting this screening down–when the film is a rare and brilliant glimpse at the trans women of color from NYC which has inspired so many for decades. They’ll gripe if they aren’t in your movie and they’ll gripe if you show a movie they’re starring in paired with the wrong musical acts. Or if a white real girl makes the film. Bizarre.

The reason I mention all this is that this very well-done play takes it’s own liberties with the Stonewall story. In fact, Street Theater’s program quotes the artistic director as saying about the writer Doric Wilson “His vision is unique among Stonewall chroniclers in that Street Theater is not so much a play about what happened as it is about what made it happen.” And in fact, the entire show builds up to the actual riot and ends at it’s beginning. So Doric takes fictional characters which give you an idea of the types of people and situations which led up to the altercations.

WHAT? Writer Doric Wilson is guilty of the same thing Roland Emmerich is? Taking liberties with our histories? BOYCOTT STREET THEATER AT ONCE!

Does it make any difference to you that the playwright was present at all three nights of the Stonewall Rebellion? Does that give him the right to do what we judged Emmerich so harshly on?

There were no trans people in cast–should we boycott? There is a trans person in the crew and she is a trans person of color. Does that count? And no, it isn’t “trans erasure” to not mention her name. Maybe she doesn’t want to be outed as trans.

Out of a cast of fourteen, there was one black and one latino actor. Do we denounce this play as whitewashing history?

The non-stop hilarious jokes could be problematic–does making any joke about Stonewall make light of the plight of trans people, the homeless and drug addicts who hung out at the bar and in the Village? Oooh, ya can’t be too careful nowadays.

The choice is yours–do you want to be told what to think and simply obey? Or do you want to be able to enjoy a totally enjoyable look at a pivotal moment in gay rights–written, acted and directed with aplomb?

I was floored by this production. For chrissakes, it was at The Eagle! Not my scene but cherished gay safe place complete with safe words for sure. And this chestnut, written in 1982 was first presented at The Mineshaft (!) in 1983. No wonder the humor is so raucously funny. I think plays in leather bars are an insane idea, and as gay hook-ups leave the bars for the internet, we may see more creative ways to pack our former cruise spots with (gasp!) culture. I giggled when Johnathan Cedano, who plays a crazed revolutionary, told me that some of the genetic females in the cast were a little off put by the smell of urine in this new theatrical venue. Just tell them that The Eagle is piss-elegant now that they have shows and such! And honey, anything from the Mineshaft which is still alive needs to be celebrated as not only part of gay history, but as having a miraculously resilient immune system. Let’s be real!

She may not be trans and he may not even like being called a she, but actor Michael Lynch is a Class A scene-stealer as drag/trans hooker Boom Boom. I don’t know where Michael Lynch is on the gender scale. But it’s delivery was on par with Good Times’ Florida and Willona and The Jeffersons’ Weezy Jefferson and Helen. When you can get belly laughs from just a double take, just imagine the scenery this queen chewed with great material to deliver. The program says the actor “is a mite possessive of this role” which he originated in 1983. As he should be. Michael’s one of those actors like Billy Porter who don’t always do drag, but when they choose to they can outshine many full-time drag queens with all of their magic. Boundless stage presence. And a great chemistry with the daffy white drag queen/trans hooker played by Chris Andersson.

The whole cast was terrific, but stand-outs included Eilis Cahill as a drugged out hippie chick, Rebecca Nyahay as a belligerent bulldagger and Jeremy Lawrence playing a closet case cruising for rough trade to perfection. Though the Eagle may be spartan and I don’t love folding chairs, these are legitimate actors all knocking it out of the park with dynamite material. DO NOT MISS! Only three more performances left tonight, Friday and Saturday at 7PM. Tix are $18 and well worth every penny.

COOL NEW MUSIC FROM RITA MORENO!

New tune from Rita Moreno, who I find as enchanting as the day I fell in love with her the first time West Side Story was televised. That was a big night at the Ingle family home. Why an 8 year old boy in Cahttanooga would identify with a fiery latina spitfire in NYC is beyond me, but Rita did. A foreshadowing of my own move to the Big Apple and firing up a few latino gents here? I’m glad Rita’s still making music. And I like this–kinda nutty towards the end!

OBAMA’S SLOPPY, BLOODY DRONE WARS LITERALLY MISSING THE MARK

Barack Obama is painted as clever when it comes to foreign policy. He speaks out giant “dumb” wars like Iraq and focuses not (allegedly) on large, sloppy occupations like George W. Bush, but more on diplomacy and precision drone strikes where there are no boots on the ground at risk. Except that new leaks show that there’s no precision at all. 90% of the drone deaths aren’t the pinpointed terrorists. Howdya like them odds? But I’ll guarantee you one thing, when kids in Yemen look forward to playing on overcast days because they’re more likely to be bombed on the sunny ones they avoid, and when Obama’s drones turn wedding parties into funerals, bomb an area and then return to that area for the funeral of who they’ve bombed and then bomb that function, and even kill a 16 year old US citizen in Yemen who was on no suspect list–it’s clear that Obama’s drone wars in multiple countries will create many new terrorists. Just as George W. Bush’s bloodsport in Iraq helped create the chaos and hatred of the West which led to Isis’s formation.

Do you like Obama’s doing with your tax dollars? Missing the targets 90% of the time and killing civilians? Creating generations of new terrorists? Another of Obama’s clear failures. And how can we evaluate Obama’s best replacement in the upcoming elections until we acknowledge his many failings. Acknowledge his successes, too, if you feel he’s had them. But 90% WHOOPS! WE MISSED! rate is deplorable and shows utter disrespect for human life. Probably because it’s human life with brown skin color and a different religion. Which is kind of a mind f#ck coming from our first president of color whose middle name is Hussein.

HUFFPO: “The controversial U.S. drone strike program in the Middle East aims to pinpoint and kill terrorist leaders, but new documents indicate that a staggering number of these “targeted killings” affect far more people than just their targets.

According to a new report from The Intercept, nearly 90 percent of people killed in recent drone strikes in Afghanistan “were not the intended targets” of the attacks.

Documents detailing a special operations campaign in northeastern Afghanistan, Operation Haymaker, show that between January 2012 and February 2013, U.S. special operations airstrikes killed more than 200 people. Of those, only 35 were the intended targets. During one five-month period of the operation, according to the documents, nearly 90 percent of the people killed in airstrikes were not the intended targets. In Yemen and Somalia, where the U.S. has far more limited intelligence capabilities to confirm the people killed are the intended targets, the equivalent ratios may well be much worse.
The report, compiled from classified documents released by a source in the intelligence community, corroborates the many news accounts of civilian deaths caused by drone strikes. U.S. drone strikes have killed scores of civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia since 2009.”

OBAMA’S SLEAZIEST MOVE EVER: THE TPP

I realize that some people’s involvement with politics is to comment on Michelle Obama’s hair or outfit, but her husband is actively trying to screw working Americans with a secret trade deal which will kill US jobs, give Big Pharma enhanced price-gouging and monopoly rights and even enable foreign corporations to sue the US government if it passes laws which might lessen multi-national corporations’ profits.

Let me give you an example of this to prove how soulless Obama is and how he has totally been bought by corporations. You know those cancer warnings on cigarette packs? New warnings like this would not be allowed after the TPP. Or if the US passed US safety laws for workers, if a corporation thought that meeting these laws would cut down on it’s productivity, it could sue the country which made the laws or the warnings, because it cuts down on the corporations’ profits. The corporations could even sue based on perceived future profits. So not only does Obama place big business over safety of Americans, he would actually diminish US sovereignty and allow corporations to sue governments. Obama criticized the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision which he claimed put corporations above people, yet he’s attempting to now put corporations over whole countries in this disgraceful move.

AMY GOODMAN: What does President Obama gain by this?

ROBERT WEISSMAN: You know, that is a complete mystery. This is supposedly going to be a big part of his legacy. Well, if you ask Bill Clinton about his legacy with NAFTA, it’s something he’s embarrassed about and doesn’t want associated with him. And that’s what it’s going to be for President Obama if this deal goes through. I mean, I think President Obama has been—you know, he’s unfortunately influenced by Mike Froman, who’s the USTR and a personal friend, who’s a believer in this stuff, but a pure corporate guy. And I think that in Washington, D.C., outside—unlike everywhere else in the country, in Washington, D.C., serious people know that you have to support free trade, and therefore the president has done that. Now, of course, the rest of the country understands it much more clearly through experience. And also, of course, these deals have nothing to do with free trade, exemplified by these Big Pharma protection provisions, which are all about monopolies and undermining and interfering with free trade and free competition.

WATCH ME TERRORIZE MAY FRIEND’S PET

These are after a shoot for Feast Of Fun’s new series Cooking With Drag Queens.

HILLARY STEALS ANOTHER OF BERNIE SANDERS’ IDEAS

In another policy waffle, Hillary is now slamming Obama’s TPP trade deal, which Bernie Sanders has been slamming since it’s inception. Hillary is saying she now needs to know more about the deal, which governs 40% of the world’s trade. So if democratic candidates Hillary, Sanders and O’Malley are against the TPP, what kind of bullshit democrat is Obama for trying to do this dirty deal in secret? We’re being fed a narrative that this awful GOP Congress obstructs Obama on all the great things he wants to achieve. And that this Congress is awful. So why are the Republicans in this awful Congress all siding with Obama on this crooked, secret trade deal which benefits corporations only and will kill US jobs? Because Obama represents those corporations more than he represents working Americans. Now Hillary, who previously called the TPP the “gold standard” of trade deals while she was Secretary of State, is suddenly against it. So that she can seem more liberal by borrowing ideas from actual liberals like Sanders and Warren. And deceive voters into thinking she represents them. Get real. Check out her campaign donors to see who she represents. You’ll find corporations are all of her top donors–the same kind of corporations the TPP will benefit.

SECRETS OF THE GREAT PYRAMID (CLUB)

Saturday October 17 – November 7th, 2015
Secrets of the Great Pyramid:
The Pyramid Cocktail Lounge as Cultural Laboratory
Curated by Brian Butterick aka Hattie Hathaway

Howl! Happening: an Arturo Vega Project presents Secrets of the Great Pyramid, an exhibition paying tribute to the legacy of the famed 80s nightclub. Named for the bizarre stepped pyramid motif above the entrance of the bar, the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge became the epicenter of the nascent EV/LES artistic community and eventually sparked a cultural revolution in music, dance, theater, video, fine arts, performance art, activism, feminism and LBGT politics.
More than a reunion, a retrospective, or a forced march through niche history, Secrets Of the Great Pyramid shows how a simple cultural laboratory continues to resonate in Post-Millennial America.
Secrets of the Great Pyramid Opening Reception: October 17, 6–9 PM. Live performance: Cafe Iguana at 8 PM. The exhibition runs through November 7, 2015 at Howl! Happening, 6 East lst Street, New York. For further information visit howlarts.org or call (917) 475-1294. (See performance schedule at end of release). All events FREE.

Featured in the three-week exhibition will be a recreation of the legendary Pyramid bar; artwork and visuals from deceased trailblazers and working artists embraced by the Pyramid; ephemera and ancient artifacts; and a veritable three-ring circus of performances and other events that spotlight the enduring spirit of the club.
On December 10, 1981, Ronald Reagan had been president for less than a year when a group of New York art-school flunk-outs threw a party at a small Polish/Ukrainian dive bar on Avenue A in New York’s East Village. Ed Koch was mayor, the East Village was in flames, the street drug trade was rampant, and rents were cheap. First Avenue was viewed as the farthest east any sane person would dare to tread. The bar was called the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge; the party, On the Range. Within a few weeks, a simple excuse to frolic had transformed into a seven-nights-a-week venue—an epicenter of art, music, performance, and social change.
Included in the exhibition will be Art and Multimedia by:

Stephen Tashjian, Greer Lankton, David Wojnarowicz, Joseph Horatio, Julie Hair, Billy Beyond, Samoa, Trey Speegle, Deb-O-Raw C, Jack Waters, Peter Cramer, Laura Levine, Michael (London) Berube,Tanya Ransom, Alice O’Malley O’Malley, Clayton Patterson, Jayne County, Connie Fleming, Chris Tanner, Keiko Bonk, Frederick Nunley, Aner Candelario, Lynn Grabowski, Antony/Blacklips, Andé Ande Whyland, Billy Beyond, Nelson Sullivan, Marjan Moghaddam Moghaddam, Richard Oszust, Mark Rizzo, Scot Wright, John Kelly, Flloyd, Leslie Lowe, Tweed Theaterworks, James Romberger, Marguerite Van Cook, Tennavision, Dug Wah, Robert Petrick, and more TBA.

Performers include Pioneering Experimental Theater performer Agosto Machado, Pyramid/Wigstock co-foundress Sister Dimension, Poet Kennon B. THE WIGGIEST THING I’VE EVER SEEN!

HAIR EXTENSIONS: CIRCA 1955

HAIR EXTENSIONS: CIRCA 1955Lost Footage of the Birth of Tape-Ins!Prior to the technology that made hair extensions more feasible in the later part of the 20th century, your primary choices for add on hair came only in the form of wigs or clip-ins. We’re betting you didn’t know that the grandfather of modern tape-ins was born on the head of actor Gregory Peck (aka Anthony Keane in Hitchcock’s, “The Paradine Case”)!In 1950 Warner Brothers began filming their epic, “Moby Dick” in Wales and had chosen a young Gregory Peck for the role of Captain Ahab. To age him, they contacted a firm of wig specialists in London to create removable grey streaks that could be added and removed from his hair daily. They created “hair flashes” that could be easily added to Peck’s hair with spirit gum. During the filming, one of Peck’s female assistants borrowed one of his flashes for a dance and it caused a sensation. By the end of 1955 salons in the UK and America were getting calls by the dozens from women wanting the “new Vogue”Seen here in this lost footage, hair stylist Bertram Goodwin is riding the trend by showcasing his latest in salon service on South American actress Alicia Lotti. Watch as he selects different colors to complement her dress and then applies them with spirit gum to her hairline…and then thank your lucky stars that we had adhesive now for something that blends in a little more naturally.
